Everything you need to know before you arrive
A few handy tips and local knowledge to help you make the most of your stay at Ahana Hillside and your time in Tropical North Queensland.
Ahana Hillside is at 69863 Bruce Highway, Aloomba — a straight 35-minute drive south from Cairns Airport. The airport handles domestic flights from all major Australian cities plus international routes from Asia and the Pacific. A rental car is highly recommended to explore the region freely.
The dry season from May to October offers warm days around 26°C and cooler evenings — perfect for hiking and outdoor adventures. The wet season from November to April is hotter and more humid with dramatic tropical downpours, but the landscape is at its most lush, the waterfalls are thundering, and visitor numbers drop.
Tropical North Queensland is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Keep an eye out for endangered southern cassowaries near Aloomba, tree kangaroos in the highlands, platypus at dawn in Tablelands streams, and an incredible array of tropical birds. Estuarine crocodiles inhabit local waterways — always observe warning signs and swim only in designated areas.
Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in coastal waters from November to May. Beaches like Palm Cove and Trinity Beach have stinger nets during this period. When on reef trips, wear a stinger suit — most tour operators provide them. Freshwater swimming holes like Babinda Boulders and Crystal Cascades are stinger-free year-round.
Tropical North Queensland is a food lover's paradise. The region produces world-class coffee, chocolate, macadamias, tropical fruits like mangoes and rambutans, and fresh seafood. Visit Rusty's Markets in Cairns on a Saturday morning for the full experience, or explore the Tablelands' farm gates, cheese makers, and the famous Gallo Dairyland.
Beyond the reef and rainforest, TNQ is an adventure playground. Take on white-water rafting on the Tully or Barron rivers, bungee jump at AJ Hackett in Smithfield, float above the Tablelands in a hot air balloon at dawn, or glide through the canopy on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. The Kuranda Scenic Railway is another must-do for breathtaking gorge views.
